Apple to Support Messaging Standard, Easing Google Conflict Over Green Text Bubbles
The change is unlikely to burst the green-blue text divide, but might improve exchanges between iPhone and Android users
Apple AAPL 0.90%increase; green up pointing triangle plans to support a standard that will improve messaging with Android phones and enable new features, helping quell the blue-bubble/green-bubble debate around texts.
Google has long pushed for Apple to adopt a communication protocol called rich communications systems, or RCS, that aims to replace traditional text messaging with more robust industrywide chat features. Such a change could help ease a stigma for users of its Android operating system.
“We believe the RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS,” Apple said, referring to older messaging standards. “This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.”
Apple’s announcement Thursday means iPhone and Android users will have more evenhanded texting experiences. Higher-quality photo and video sharing, read notifications and other features unavailable in Android-iPhone exchanges could become available. Apple said it would add support for RCS later next year, though the iMessage platform itself will remain exclusive to the company’s hardware.
When an Android user is engaging in a text conversation with an iPhone user, the iPhone user’s responses are green rather than blue.
The coming changes are unlikely to burst the green-blue bubble divide, but they might make text exchanges between iPhone and Android users more productive and less divisive.
Some teens have described peer pressure to ditch smartphones with Google’s Android operating system because it makes the group-chat bubbles green. Others reported being ostracized or singled out after switching away from iPhones.
