The more men go fishing, the better their mental health, study finds Fox News MELISSA RUDY September 30, 2023 at 2:10 AM Casting a line could reel in a lot more than the catch of the day. A recent study has shown that men who enjoy fishing as a hobby may have better mental health. The study, conducted by researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, Ulster University, and Queen’s University, Belfast, found that fishing on a regular basis contributed to a lower risk of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and other mental health conditions. Researchers polled 1,752 males about their fishing activities, as well as other factors including previous mental illness, exercise and overall well-being. The participants who said they fished on a regular basis were nearly 17% less likely to have experienced mental health conditions compared to men who did not fish frequently. The more often the men fished, the better their mental health, according to the study, which was published in t

Good example of a condon options

As Hal:  good example of a condon options A "condor" in options trading refers to the Iron Condor strategy. The Iron Condor is a neutral strategy and is created by combining a Bull Put Spread and a Bear Call Spread. Here’s a step-by-step example: Iron Condor Example: Let's assume stock XYZ is trading at $100. 1. Sell 1 out-of-the-money (OTM) Put Option: Strike Price: $95 Premium received: $2  Buy 1 further OTM Put Option (for protection): Strike Price: $90 Premium paid: $1 This combination creates a Bull Put Spread. 3. Sell 1 OTM Call Option: Strike Price: $105 Premium received: $2 4. Buy 1 further OTM Call Option (for protection): Strike Price: $110 Premium paid: $1 This combination creates a Bear Call Spread. Net Premium Received: = (Premium from sold put + Premium from sold call) - (Premium for bought put + Premium for bought call) = ($2 + $2) - ($1 + $1) = $4 - $2 = $2 Maximum Profit: The net premium received = $2 (per share or $200 for standard options contract of

Avert Government Shutdown

Click to enlarge Congress Set to Avert Government Shutdown Measure keeps government funded until mid-November, omits Ukraine and border provisions WASHINGTON—Congress was on the verge of averting a government shutdown Saturday, after the House passed a measure with broad bipartisan support to extend funding through mid-November and sent the matter to the Senate. White House officials said President Biden supports the measure and will sign it as soon as possible. The surprise breakthrough upended expectations that Congress was too divided to pass anything in time to keep the government funded past 12:01 a.m. Sunday. But a delay in the Senate in quickly taking up the measure late Saturday raised the possibility of more twists in the drama. The House voted 335-91 for the funding measure, which includes $16 billion in disaster relief but omits aid for Ukraine. It also excludes border-security measures sought by Republicans. The margin exceeded the two-thirds majority needed to clear the b

What are Forex Options?

Image
Ask Hal: What are Forex Options?  Forex options are a type of financial derivative that gives an investor the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a currency pair at a specific price (known as the "strike price") on or before a specified expiration date. There are two primary types of forex options: Call Option: Provides the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy a currency pair at a specified price. Put Option: Provides the holder the right, but not the obligation, to sell a currency pair at a specified price. Here's a basic breakdown of how forex options work: Premium: This is the price paid by the buyer of the option to the seller for the rights granted by the option. Strike Price (or Exercise Price): This is the rate at which the holder can buy (for a call option) or sell (for a put option) the underlying currency pair. Expiration Date: The date by which the option must be exercised or it will expire worthless. Example: Let's say you believe tha

U.S. crude oil futures

Image
U.S. crude oil futures extended their three-month-long rally, bringing them to their highest level of the year. Futures for November delivery settled at $93.68 a barrel, up 3.6% from yesterday's close and more than 30% since June. The jump extended a run-up in prices that began in early July, after production cuts made by OPEC and its allies reduced global oil supplies to a level below demand. U.S. crude settled at its highest level since August 2022, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Brent crude, its global counterpart, finished at $96.55, its highest close Oil up since November. Prices popped about 1.5% after the Energy Information Administration reported that U.S. crude inventories  fell by more than expected  last week, to their lowest level of the year. The move added to gains in earlier trading that were fueled in part by an American Petroleum Institute survey showing crude oil inventories in Cushing, Okla. declining to a 14-month low. Cushing is the delivery location for t

Why Now Is a Horrible Time to Refinance Student Loans A chance to tap low rates has passed as borrowers prepare to make payments for the first time in years Starting in October, tens of millions of student-loan borrowers will need to start making payments again. PHOTO: ALEX BRANDON/ASSOCIATED PRESS Borrowers facing down the return of federal student-loan payments might be tempted to refinance their loans in an attempt to save money. For many, that is a terrible idea. With the Federal Reserve pushing interest rates to a multidecade high and new government programs offering the promise of low payments and possible debt forgiveness, personal-finance experts say refinancing would benefit only a handful of borrowers.  “It doesn’t make any sense to refi that because your costs are going to go up, not down,” said Jack Wallace, director of governmental and lender relations at Yrefy, a private student-loan company, speaking about those with undergraduate loans, the majority of student borrowe

How Much Will It Cost to Defeat Inflation? Signs of slowdown outside the U.S. provide latest indicator of whether central banks have made the right decision on rates  ET 71 Gift unlocked article Listen (5 min) The Bank of England recently left key interest rates unchanged.  PHOTO:  JASON ALDEN/BLOOMBERG NEWS LONDON—Central banks around the world appear to be nearing the end of a series of interest-rate rises, but the economic cost of the battle against inflation is only beginning to emerge, with mounting signs that Europe could be among the hardest hit. Adding to those signals were surveys released Friday suggesting that Europe’s economy contracted in the three months through September. Many central banks have signaled that interest rates should now be high enough to bring inflation back down. Of the 12 central banks that announced policy decisions in the past five days, eight left their key interest rates unchanged, including the  Federal Reserve  and the  Bank of England .  The rec
