The dot-com bubble taught investors to be wary of stock-market rallies powered by a technological boom—that is, until generative artificial intelligence sent tech stocks soaring this year. Shares of Nvidia NVDA -0.39%decrease; red down pointing triangle, the graphics-chip maker at the heart of the frenzy, have nearly tripled in 2023, while the Nasdaq-100 has climbed 38% and the S&P 500 has gained 16%. For some investors, the surge in Nvidia—now the fifth-largest U.S. company by market value—is difficult to chalk up to anything but speculative mania. Its weighting in the benchmark stock indexes means everyday investors are at the whims of its trajectory, whether they believe in AI’s potential or not. “There’s a huge boom in AI—some people are scrambling to get exposure at any cost, while others are sounding the alarm that this will end in tears,” said Kai Wu, founder and chief investment officer of Sparkline Capital. “Investors can benefit from innovation-led growth, but must be w

Amazon Cuts Dozens of House Brands as It Battles Costs, Regulators Company’s cuts include all but three of its 30 clothing labels, such as Goodthreads and Lark & Ro Amazon.com AMZN 0.52%increase; green up pointing triangle is jettisoning dozens of its in-house brands as part of a significant reduction of its private-label operation as it works to fend off antitrust scrutiny and shore up profit. The Seattle-based company in the past year has decided to eliminate 27 of its 30 clothing brands, such as Lark & Ro, Daily Ritual and Goodthreads, according to people familiar with the matter. Some of the brands remain on Amazon’s site for now as the company sells off remaining inventory, but when completed its house-label clothing division will have just three brands: Amazon Essentials, Amazon Collection and Amazon Aware.  Amazon also is dropping private-label furniture brands, phasing out Rivet and Stone & Beam once its stock of those items is gone, some of the people said.  Exac

STT good for me?

Quick way for profits on STT! Short-term trading can be more favorable in a bullish market compared to a bearish or uncertain market, but it still comes with its own set of risks and challenges. Here are some points to consider: Advantages of Short-Term Trading in a Bullish Market: Increased Volatility: Bullish markets often experience higher volatility, which can create more frequent price fluctuations. Short-term traders thrive on volatility as it provides opportunities for quick gains. Quick Profits: In a bullish market, there can be rapid price increases across various assets. Short-term traders aim to capture these quick price movements to generate profits over a short period. Liquidity: Bull markets tend to attract more participants and higher trading volumes, leading to increased liquidity. This liquidity makes it easier for short-term traders to enter and exit positions without significant price slippage. Technical Analysis: Short-term traders often rely on technical analysis,

Yellow Files BK

Trucker Yellow Files for Bankruptcy, Will Liquidate The company’s chief executive says Yellow is closing after the chapter 11 filing, costing some 30,000 workers their jobs Yellow, the 99-year-old trucking company, filed for bankruptcy and is closing the business, falling victim to mounting debt including a government loan and a standoff with the Teamsters union. The bankruptcy follows years of struggles for the Nashville, Tenn.-based trucker as it tried to address the debt it accumulated through a series of mergers and a $700 million federal Covid-19 relief loan during the pandemic. On July 30, the company shut down its operations and laid off a large number of workers. “It is with profound disappointment that Yellow announces that it is closing after nearly 100 years in business,” Chief Executive Darren Hawkins said in announcing the filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late Sunday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. The closure means the loss of 30,000 jobs, including 22,

September is traditionally the weakest month for U.S. stocks. This year, investors say the turning of the calendar should be especially worrying. Stocks have risen sharply after last year’s selloff, defying any number of risks along the way. The S&P 500 is up 17% so far this year, including a 3.1% increase in July that reflected gains across all 11 sectors. Wall Street’s so-called fear gauge, the Cboe Volatility Index, is sitting well below historical averages. If history is any guide, investors’ optimism will soon be put to the test. The S&P 500 has lost an average of 1.1% in September dating back to 1928, making it the worst month for stocks’ performance. It isn’t just a few bad years dragging down returns: The broad index has risen less than 45% of the time over that period, also the worst month by that measure, according to Dow Jones Market Data.   There is no clear reason for what is known as the “September effect.” But it is typically a month without the type of news that

Robinhood works great! Let's say you're an experienced trader who holds the following positions in your portfolio: Long 100 shares of Company A (stock) Short 5 put options of Company B (option to sell) Short 10 call options of Company C (option to buy) In a traditional margin account, each position would be assessed separately for margin requirements. However, with a portfolio margin account, the broker would take a holistic view of your entire portfolio to calculate the margin requirement. They would consider the potential risks and offsets between your positions. Here's how the calculation might work: Long Shares of Company A: This is a straightforward long stock position. The margin requirement for this position might be based on the standard Regulation T requirement of 50%. Short Put Options of Company B: These put options give you the obligation to buy Company B's stock. Since this is a short put position, it's considered a potential liability. However, the bro

A portfolio margin account is a type of margin account offered by some brokerages to experienced traders and investors. Unlike a traditional margin account, which uses Regulation T rules to determine the margin requirements for individual securities, a portfolio margin account takes into consideration the overall risk of an entire portfolio, rather than just the risk of individual positions. Here are some key points to understand about portfolio margin accounts: Risk-Based Margin: Portfolio margining is based on a risk-based model that calculates margin requirements by assessing the potential losses of an entire portfolio under different market scenarios. It considers the correlations between different positions and the potential offsetting benefits of hedging strategies. Complexity: Portfolio margin accounts are typically available to experienced traders who engage in complex trading strategies, including options, futures, and other derivatives. These traders often have a deep under
