Bye May. Chuckie--   (Wednesday market open)  As Congress gathers to vote on a debt ceiling bill, the market's focus turned overseas this morning to cooler-than-expected data from China and Europe. Stocks came under pressure but the dollar rose and crude oil plunged. Inflation data from France and parts of Germany was lower than anticipated and a manufacturing reading from China showed activity contracting there for the second month in a row. Weaker inflation in Europe could take pressure off the European Central Bank to keep raising rates, perhaps a reason why the euro fell versus the dollar today. With Friday morning's May  Nonfarm Payrolls  report and a debt ceiling vote looming, trading on Wall Street could be subdued the next couple of days, as it was to some extent Tuesday. Major indexes were broadly lower in premarket trading. As people returned from the holiday yesterday, a familiar pattern resumed. A few mega-cap info tech stocks shined Tuesday while most of...

JPMorgan, led by Jamie Dimon, is eyeing a stock-picking service driven by AI. JPMorgan Chase is looking into a software service using artificial intelligence for picking stocks, according to trademark filings, as the banking giant joins the AI fervor that has gripped investors in recent months. JPMorgan (ticker: JPM) has applied to trademark “IndexGPT,” referencing the type of AI that supports Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot launched last year, which has spurred widespread public and investor interest in the technology. IndexGPT could use “cloud-computing software, using artificial intelligence for use in…selection of financial securities and financial assets,” according to the trademark filing, which also references distribution via a software-as-a-service model. The news was first reported by CNBC. A boom in interest regarding investment opportunities in AI has buoyed tech stocks this week, led higher by chip giant Nvidia (NVDA). The move by JPMorgan supports h...

Debt ceiling deal reached!

Image
White House and House Republicans strike an agreement in principle to raise the debt ceiling. Washington CNN  —  The White House and House Republicans have an agreement in principle on a deal to  raise the debt ceiling for two years  and cap spending, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy confirmed Saturday, moving the nation one step back from the brink of a historic default. The agreement in principle was reached by President Joe Biden and McCarthy during a phone call Saturday, a source familiar with their call said. Now both leaders face the tall task of selling the deal to their allies in both chambers of Congress, where Republicans control the House and Democrats control the Senate. The deal  must get passed before June 5  – the crucial date when Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says the US will no longer be able to pay its bills. “After weeks of negotiations, we have come to an agreement in principle. We still have a lot of work to do but I believe this ...

Lordstown Motors splits

Image
KEY TAKEAWAYS Lordstown Motors announced a 1-for-15 stock split, effective Wednesday. The move is designed to get its stock price above $1 to avoid Nasdaq delisting and salvage a Foxconn investment. Foxconn warned the low stock price meant conditions for its $47.3 million investment were not met. Struggling electric truck maker Lordstown Motors ( RIDE ) announced it will effect a 1-for-15  stock split  as it tries to prevent being delisted on the Nasdaq and losing a key investor. Lordstown said shareholders approved the move at the company’s annual meeting on Monday, and the shares will begin trading on the split-adjusted basis as of 12:01 AM Eastern Time Wednesday. 1 The firm explained that the decision was “intended to improve the marketability and liquidity” of the stock, and will allow shares to rise above the $1 threshold needed to satisfy Nasdaq listing requirements.  In addition, Lordstown noted the move should lead investor Foxconn to go forward with the el...

U.S. stock futures were flat on Tuesday night as investors kept an eye on debt-ceiling negotiations. Futures linked to the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 25 points, or 0.08%. S&P 500 futures inched higher by 0.08%, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 0.05%. The three major averages fell during regular trading Tuesday. The S&P 500  lost 1.12%, while the Nasdaq Composite  and the Dow Jones Industrial Average  declined 1.26% and 0.69%, respectively.  Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen previously warned lawmakers that a potential default in early June is “highly likely.” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he had a “productive” discussion with President Joe Biden on Monday. Nonetheless, there were few indicators of progress made in negotiations on Tuesday.  Even if Washington’s officials were to raise the debt ceiling, however, markets could be roiled, according to Bill Merz, head of capital markets research at U.S. Bank Wealth Management. That’s because th...

To calculate how much profit you made from your investment, you can use the following formula: Profit = (Current Price - Purchase Price) * Number of Shares In your case, let's assume the current price of XYZ is $45.35 (the original price of $40.00 plus the increase of $5.35). You have 100 shares, so applying the formula: Profit = ($45.35 - $40.00) * 100 Profit = $5.35 * 100 Profit = $535.00 Therefore, you made a profit of $535.00 from your investment in XYZ.

"Buy the dip" MEAN?

Image
"Buy the dip" is a phrase commonly used in financial markets, particularly in stock trading or investing. It refers to a strategy where an investor buys an asset, such as stocks, when its price experiences a temporary decline or "dips" during a broader upward trend. The idea behind "buy the dip" is that market fluctuations are a normal part of investing, and temporary price declines can present opportunities to purchase assets at a lower price before they potentially increase in value again. By buying the dip, investors aim to capitalize on the expectation that the asset's price will eventually rebound and continue its upward trajectory. The phrase is often associated with a long-term investment strategy that emphasizes buying quality assets and holding onto them for an extended period, rather than attempting to time the market by predicting short-term price movements. It assumes that over time, the general trend of the market or the particular asset ...

Gravel Stock Costs Half

Image
Location, they say, is everything, and gravel maker CRH would certainly agree. Its coming move from Europe to the U.S. could be just what its stock needs to drive further upside. Dublin-based CRH (ticker: CRH) is one of the largest building-materials companies in the world. It produces aggregates, the rocks used to make concrete, as well as cement, asphalt, and other construction-related products that it sells in Europe and the U.S. It also builds roads. It’s a good business—and likely to get a boost in the U.S. from recent federal legislation. Some optimism is starting to be reflected in its shares. CRH’s American depositary receipts have gained 23% over the past 12 months. Despite that impressive gain, CRH trades at a deep discount to its U.S.-traded peers. Martin Marietta Materials (MLM) and Vulcan Materials (VMC), at 22 and 25 times estimated 2024 earnings, respectively, fetch at least twice the valuation as CRH’s 11 times, despite a growth outlook that looks fairly similar. ...

how a strangle option works:

Image
A strangle is an options trading strategy that involves buying both a call option and a put option with the same expiration date but different strike prices. This strategy is used when an investor expects a significant price movement in the underlying asset, but is uncertain about the direction of the move. Here's how a strangle option works: Selecting the Options: To implement a strangle, you choose an out-of-the-money call option and an out-of-the-money put option. An out-of-the-money option means the strike price is above the current market price for a call option or below the current market price for a put option. The distance between the strike prices of the call and put options should be relatively equal. Buying Call Option: The call option gives you the right, but not the obligation, to buy the underlying asset at the specified strike price before the expiration date. By purchasing a call option, you are betting that the underlying asset's price will increase signific...

What does "Liquidity" mean?

Image
"Liquidity" refers to the ease with which an asset or investment can be bought or sold in the market without significantly impacting its price. It represents the degree to which an asset can be converted into cash quickly and at a fair price. An asset or investment is considered liquid if there is a robust market with enough active buyers and sellers, allowing transactions to occur swiftly and with minimal impact on the asset's price. High liquidity implies that it is relatively easy to enter or exit a position in the asset without causing substantial price fluctuations. On the other hand, an asset is considered illiquid if there is a limited number of buyers and sellers, resulting in slower or more challenging transactions and potentially wider bid-ask spreads. Illiquid assets may require more time, effort, or concessions to sell, which can lead to a higher risk of loss or difficulty in accessing cash when needed. Liquidity is an important consideration for investors b...

What are munis?

Image
Municipal bonds, commonly referred to as "munis," can be an attractive investment option for certain individuals looking for tax-advantaged income. Munis are debt securities issued by state and local governments, as well as various government agencies, to finance public infrastructure projects or other governmental activities. When you invest in municipal bonds, you essentially lend money to the issuing government entity in exchange for regular interest payments and the return of the principal amount at maturity. Here's how munis work as an investment: Issuance: State and local governments issue municipal bonds to raise funds for various purposes, such as building schools, highways, or utilities. These bonds are typically classified as either general obligation bonds (GO bonds) or revenue bonds. Types of Municipal Bonds: a. General Obligation Bonds (GO bonds): Backed by the full faith and credit of the issuing government, GO bonds are considered safer because they rel...

Should I buy Gold Bullion??

Image
Gold bullion is a tangible asset that is often considered a safe haven investment. It has historically been seen as a store of value and a hedge against inflation or economic uncertainties. However, the value of gold can fluctuate, and it may not always provide significant returns compared to other investment options. Here are some factors to consider when evaluating whether to buy gold bullion: Portfolio Diversification: Gold can be used as a diversification tool in an investment portfolio. It can help reduce overall risk by providing an alternative asset class that may perform differently than stocks, bonds, or other investments. Economic Conditions: Gold prices can be influenced by economic factors such as inflation, interest rates, geopolitical tensions, and market sentiment. It is important to assess the current economic environment and consider whether gold aligns with your investment objectives. Long-Term Outlook: Investing in gold bullion is typically considered a long-te...

to purchase Treasury Bills

Image
In the United States, the minimum investment required to purchase Treasury Bills (T-bills) is $100. T-bills are issued with a minimum face value of $1,000, but investors can purchase them in increments of $100. This means that if you want to invest in T-bills, you can start with a minimum investment of $100. However, keep in mind that T-bills are typically sold in auctions, and the minimum bid increment is $100. Therefore, you would need to bid in multiples of $100 when participating in a T-bill auction. It's important to note that the specific details and procedures for investing in U.S. Treasury Bills can be found on the official website of the U.S. Department of the Treasury (treasury.gov) or by consulting a financial advisor familiar with the investment process.

When swing trading bonds:

Image
We do all the work for a monthly sub While swing trading is commonly associated with stocks and currencies, it is also possible to apply swing trading principles to bonds. Swing trading in the bond market involves taking advantage of short- to medium-term price movements in bonds to capture profits. Here are a few key considerations  Bond selection : Identify bonds that exhibit sufficient price volatility to enable swing trading opportunities. Bonds with higher coupon rates, shorter maturities, or lower credit ratings tend to be more volatile. Technical analysis : Use technical analysis tools and indicators, such as moving averages, trendlines, and oscillators, to analyze bond price charts and identify potential swing trade setups. Look for price patterns and trends that indicate potential reversals or breakouts. Timeframe : Determine your preferred timeframe for swing trading bonds. This could range from a few days to several weeks, depending on the market conditions and your trad...
